Great for the priceFeb 13, 2010 My family bought a total of 4 of these futons (though directly from Walmart) weighing both price and aesthetics. Comparing other futon costs (approx. $450+), I found it to be an extremely good buy. It continues to surprise me how people expect the highest quality from cheap products as most of these reviews would illustrate. Additionally, for the price, this "Mali Flex" futon, sold mainly by Walmart, is exceptional for its price. I didn't have any problems with the wooden slats at all - none have broken through in the years that my family has had them. In fact, my family bought 2 for my mother who also didn't experience any major problems at all with hers except for being delivered a part which did not belong to one of the futons and the right part missing. That is a logistics problem and not quality. I also need to say that the frame came in silver with av good quality paint and was NOT a cheap metal or material.
Regarding the frame - all I've had to do was tighten the screws since I've had them; as with all types of furniture, screws tend to get looser with wear and time. I have had 2 of these futons in my attic bedroom and they are very comfortable for an adult to sleep on - I've spent quite a few nights on them and woken up refreshed and no back pain or other pains whatsoever. The attic bedroom is a child's bedroom and when guests are over, the children love to put the 2 futon mattresses together on the floor and pretend they are having a camp-in/out. I have also taken the mattress to the floor in the same way and I cannot begin to tell you how deeply and well I slept - I woke up the next morning absolutely loving life and feeling refreshed - with the carpeted flooring below, it was the perfect stiffness.
Regarding the mattress - the thread where the puckers are supposed to be are not covered in-sewn with buttons as they typically should be and come loose quite soon after use. The material inside is not covered by a first layer of cotton or other base cover; that means, if you want to take off the covers, the internal material, which is very very soft and plush, is directly accessible and will come apart.
I will be having new covers sewn on so this will be the only bit of work (and money to spend) that I will have on the mattress and cushions themselves but then again.. what with the price, I absolutely accept it as part of the item. Also, having a few sets of covers to exchange is actually the best thing you can do for futons, just as you would your mattresses!
Metal futon frame with wooden flex slatsMay 24, 2009 I bought a "Milan" frame several years ago locally and it's held up quite well. It's not as easy to open and close as I would like but it mostly stays in one position so it's not a huge inconvenience.
About a year ago I bought another "Milan" frame on-line but it doesn't seem to be the same. I experienced a similar problem being described by other reviewers. After putting my knee on the bed, one of the wooden "flex" slats snapped.
My futon mattress (also a year old) has inner coils and it's quite comfortable but it's outer edges don't seem to be holding their shape as well as I would like. If you're looking for comfort, I would buy the futon mattress separately. One of my previous futon mattresses had a 3 yr expected life span and after 3 years it had a huge hole in the middle (I may not have turned it as much a I should have). That's why I chose the inner coils this time which should last approx. 10 yrs.

the frame never arrived!Aug 12, 2008 this is infuriating... what can i even do about it? the cushions (which, yeah, are not good quality) arrived, but not the frame. i would never have paid this much for just the cushion!

STAY AWAY FROM THISJul 21, 2007 the product looks nice in the picture & decorative. Like many buyers, I stood on the futon & it broke. The bottom of the futon was not supported by the metal but wood. I wasted my $.

Avoid this flimsy thing!Oct 14, 2006 The concept of a futon mattress atop slats is actually comfortable and I lay on it for a week happily until I made the mistake of putting too much focused pressure and snapped/broke two of the very fragile slats by climbing onto it with my knee first. Also, I called the manufacturer on the first day to tell them that the filling inside the cushion covers was making me itch. These are not cushions with a black cover. This is a black cover filled with recycled fabric pulp. The rep was not interested in responding to my complaint. Don't buy this. Go to a futon store and buy something that resembles this and it will be much sturdier.
